Amtrak Service
Amtrak operates seven daily trains, Hiawatha Service, between Chicago and Milwaukee (six on Sundays). Travel time to Chicago is approximately 90 minutes. An additional daily train, The Empire Builder, operates between Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Portland, and Seattle. Travel time to Minneapolis is about 6 hours, and Seattle/Portland about 40 hours.
Amtrak does NOT operate service to O'Hare or Midway Airports. Metra commuter trains do not serve Milwaukee.
Amtrak Stations and Local Transit Connections
- Columbus, WI (CBS): This stop is located 90 minutes northwest of Milwaukee, and 30 minutes northeast of Madison, WI. The Empire Builder serves this station. Hiawatha trains do not serve this station. No local transit connections are known for this station.
- Milwaukee, WI (MKE): The downtown Milwaukee Amtrak station is at the Milwaukee Intermodal Terminal, located on the south side of downtown at 433 St Paul Ave. The station is close to many, many local transit services. See our Downtown Milwaukee Map for convenient connection information. Paid parking is available nearby, and free 30-minute parking is available at the station. Hiawatha and Empire Builder trains serve this station. Chicago Metra commuter trains do not serve Milwaukee. There is a taxi stand at the station, served during train arrivals.
The MKE station is 1/2 mile south of the Midwest Airlines Convention Center, and its many nearby hotels. The station is within 1 mile of Marquette University, and one mile from the Festival Park (Summerfest Grounds), and many other attractions.
- Milwaukee International Airport, WI (MKA): This stop is located 10 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee, adjacent to Remote Parking Lot B, at 5601 S. 6th St. Hiawatha trains serve this station. The Empire Builder does not stop at this station. Paid parking is available at the station. Parking shuttles between Remote Parking Lot B and the airline terminal serve this station. All local transit and intercity services stop at the south end of the airline terminal; none serve the rail station.
Avoid confusion: Mitchell Airport is 'MKE' to airlines, but 'MKA' to Amtrak. Amtrak uses 'MKE' for the downtown Milwaukee station.
- Sturtevant, WI (SVT): This stop is located 30 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee, at 9900 E. Exploration Ct.. Hiawatha trains serve this station. The Empire Builder does not stop at this station. Racine Belle Urban System route 27 serves the station.
- Glenview, IL (GLN): This stop is located 70 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee, at 1116 Depot St. Hiawatha trains and Empire Builder trains serve this station. Paid parking is available nearby (not overnight). Metra (MD-N route) commuter trains and Pace (routes 210, 228, 422, 423) buses serve the station. An inconvenient connection to O'Hare airport is available using Pace route 228 and CTA Blue line.
- Chicago, IL (CHI): Amtrak's major national hub is located 90 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee, just outside the Loop at 225 S Canal St. Hiawatha trains and Empire Builder trains serve this station. Paid parking is available at the station. Numerous local and intercity terminals are nearby. Connection to Midway airport is available using CTA Orange line. Greyhound Service
Greyhound operates ten daily buses between Chicago and Milwaukee, including late-night and early-morning service. Greyhound also operates routes to Madison, Green Bay, Appleton, Kenosha, and many other points within Wisconsin, plus several daily trips to Minneapolis.
Greyhound Station and Connection Information
- Milwaukee, WI: The downtown Milwaukee Greyhound station is at the Milwaukee Intermodal Terminal, located on the south side of downtown at 433 St Paul Ave. The station is close to many, many local transit services. See our Downtown Milwaukee Map for convenient connection information.
The station is four blocks from the Midwest Airlines Convention Center, and close to the many hotels. The station is within 1/2 mile of Marquette University, and one mile from the Festival Park (Summerfest Grounds), and many other attractions. Street parking is metered, and several parking structures are nearby. There is a taxi stand at the Greyhound station.
Greyhound does not currently offer convenient connections to Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport or to Lake Express ferry service.
- Kenosha, WI: This stop is located 50 minutes south of Milwaukee, at 2105 Roosevelt Rd. Two daily local Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Chicago serve this station. Kenosha Transit serves the station area.
- Waukegan, IL: This stop is located 75 minutes south of Milwaukee, at 2425 Grand Ave. Two daily local Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Chicago serve this station. Pace Bus routes 565 and 566 serve the station.
- Skokie, IL: This stop is located 100 minutes south of Milwaukee, at 5005 Dempster St, the CTA Yellow Line Skokie station. Two daily local Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Chicago serve this station. CTA Yellow Line trains, CTA bus routes 54A and 94, and Pace bus routes 250 and 626 serve the station.
- Cumberland Ave, IL: This stop is located 90 minutes south of Milwaukee, at 5800 N Cumberland Ave, the CTA Blue Line Cumberland station near O'Hare airport. Two daily Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Chicago serve this station. CTA Blue Line trains, CTA bus routes 69 and 81W, and Pace bus routes 240, 241, 290, and 331 serve the station.
- Chicago, IL: Greyhound's major national hub is located at 630 W Harrison St, just west of the Loop. A dizzying array of transportation options are available within walking distance. We also have more information on alternative services to Chicago and Chicago airports.
- Madison, WI: This stop is located 90 minutes west of Milwaukee, at 2 S Bedford St. Most (but not all) Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Minneapolis serve this station. Paid parking is available. Madison Metro routes 1,8,12,27,37,38 serve the station, and many other routes serve the nearby area. The Badger Bus and Jefferson Lines terminals are also located at the Greyhound station.
- Fond du Lac, WI: This stop is located 60 minutes northwest of Milwaukee at the Citgo gas station at 1305 S Main. Many (but not all) Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Green Bay serve this station. Lamers Bus and Fond du Lac Transit route 40 serve the station.
- Oshkosh, WI: This stop is located 85 minutes northwest of Milwaukee at Wittman Field (no commercial air service) at 525 W 20th Ave. Many (but not all) Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Green Bay serve this station. Lamers Bus and Oshkosh Transit route 11 serve the station.
- Appleton, WI: This stop is located 100 minutes northwest of Milwaukee at the Appleton Transit Center at 100 E Washington St. Many (but not all) Greyhound trips between Milwaukee and Green Bay serve this station. Lamers Bus and Valley Transit routes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,11,12,15,20, and 30 serve the station. This station is not convenient to the Outagamie County Regional Airport (ATW).
- Green Bay, WI: This stop is located 130 minutes north of Milwaukee at 800 Cedar St. This station is the hub for services from Milwaukee, Appleton, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.Green Bay Metro route 11 serves the station. The Metro Transit Center, with all other transit routes, is three blocks away. This station is not convenient to Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB).
Airport Express
Airport Express (operated by Coach USA) operates between Goerke's Corners, downtown Milwaukee, Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) Airport, Sturtevant, Kenosha, Chicago O'Hare (ORD) Airport, and Chicago Midway (MDW) Airport. There are fourteen daily buses, seven days a week, in each direction. Fares vary from $11 to $40 one way, which may be cheaper than the cost of parking.

Airport Express has free Park & Ride spaces at Goerke's Corners near Waukesha and at 4960 S. 13th St in Milwaukee.

- Waukesha, WI: This stop is located at the Goerke's Corners Park & Ride, at I-94 & Barker Rd. Free parking is available. Waukesha Metro lines 1 and 2, Coach USA lines 901,904,905, and Badger Bus serve the Park & Ride.
- Milwaukee, WI: This stop is located at the Milwaukee Amtrak Station, 433 St Paul Ave. The station is close to many, many local transit services. A taxi stand, rental cars, and Airport Connection are available at the airline terminal. MCTS route 80, Coach USA Kenosha route, Badger Bus, and most airlines serve the airline terminal, Amtrak stops nearby at the Mitchell Airport rail station.
- Sturtevant, WI: This stop is located at the Petro Truck Stop at Hwy 20 & Interstate 94, 717 S Sylvania Ave. Racine Belle Urban System routes 7 and 27 serve the station.
- Kenosha, WI: This stop is located at The Brat Stop restaurant at Hwy 50 & Interstate 94, 12304 75th St. Kenosha Transit route 31 serves the station area.
- Chicago O-Hare Airport (ORD): Trips from Wisconsin drop off at each terminal. Trips to Wisconsin pick up at the Bus/Shuttle Center door #4 and at Terminal 5 door #5E.
- Chicago Midway Airport (MDW): The bus stop is located outside Baggage Claim Door #3.
Megabus.com
Megabus.com (operated by Coach USA) operates between downtown Milwaukee and downtown Chicago as part of their Chicago-based midwest route network. There are five daily buses, seven days a week, in each direction.

Badger Bus Lines operates eight daily buses between Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) Airport, UW Milwaukee, Downtown Milwaukee, State Fair Park & Ride, Goerkes Corners (Waukesha), Downtown Madison, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In downtown Milwaukee, Badger Bus operates a station at James Lovell St (7th St) & Wisconsin Ave, across the street from the Greyhound station. No dedicated customer parking available. Metered street parking and several parking structures are nearby. There is a taxi stand across the street at the Greyhound station. Many attractions and other connections are very close to the Badger Bus station. Our Downtown Map is the most convenient way to find them.

- I-94 & 84th St (State Fair Park): This stop is located on the freeway ramps at Interstate 94 & 84th St. Free parking is available at the nearby State Fair Park & Ride at Interstate 94 & 76th St. MCTS route 67, and Coach USA route 901 serve the station area.
- Waukesha, WI: This stop is located at the Goerke's Corners Park & Ride, at I-94 & Barker Rd. Free parking is available. Waukesha Metro lines 1 and 2, Coach USA lines 901,904,905, and Airport Express serve the Park & Ride.
- Johnson Creek Outlet Mall: This stop is located at the Arbys restaurant at Hwy 26 & Linmar Ln. No local transit connections are known for this station.
- Madison Local Stops: Badger makes several local (flag) stops along East Washington St in Madison. Madison Metro routes 4,6,25,27 serve the local stop at Washington & Johnson Sts
- Madison, WI: This stop is located at 2 S Bedford St. Paid parking is available. Madison Metro routes 1,8,12,27,37,38 serve the station, and many other routes serve the nearby area. The Greyhound and Jefferson Lines terminals are also located at the Badger Bus station.
- Madison UW Memorial Union, WI: This stop is located at 800 Langdon St. Many Madison Metro routes serve the area. The Coach USA service to Chicago and Jefferson Lines stops are also located at the Memorial Union.
Lamers Bus Lines
Lamers Bus Lines operates one daily trip between Milwaukee, Appleton, Wausau, and intermediate stops. The bus serves the Milwaukee Greyhound and Amtrak stations, and is also an Amtrak Thruway route. Reservations are available through both Amtrak and Greyhound.

Lake Express
Lake Express is a high-speed (50 mph) cross-lake ferry operating between Milwaukee and Muskegon, MI. The ferry operates seasonally, with three daily crossings each way during the summer peak season, and two daily crossings each way during the autumn and spring. The ferry does not operate during the winter. On occasion, trips are delayed or cancelled due to weather. Prices are comparable to air travel - the ferry is relatively expensive ($68 one way for walk-on).
Lake Express Terminal and Connection information
- The Milwaukee terminal is located at 2330 S Lincoln Memorial Dr. This is several miles south of Downtown Milwaukee, and is NOT convenient to other transportation connections. MCTS does NOT serve the Lake Express terminal; the nearest MCTS service (route 53) is about 1/2 mile away. Lake Express provides an expensive shuttle to downtown hotels, but not to airports or other transport terminals. Your best option is to bring a bicycle on the ferry, or take a taxi to/from the ferry terminal.
- The Muskegon terminal, also several miles from downtown, is served by Muskegon Transit (no web site), but not by any intercity services.
SS Badger (Lake Michigan Carferry)
SS Badger, also formerly known as Lake Michigan Carferry, is a cross-lake ferry operating between Manitowoc and Ludington, MI. The ferry operates seasonally, with two daily crossings each way during the summer peak season, and one daily crossing each way during the autumn and spring. The ferry does not operate during the winter. On occasion, trips are delayed or cancelled due to weather. Prices are usually much less than less than local air travel from Green Bay.
SS Badger Terminal and Connection information
- The Manitowoc terminal is located at 900 S Lakeview Dr. Maritime Transit operates a shuttle to their downtown transit center. The Greyhound stop is nearly five miles away.
- The Ludington terminal, in downtown, is not served by any local transit or intercity services.
